Rubrouck (English spelling) Guillaume de Rubrouck

Rubrouck (English spelling) Guillaume de Rubrouck

A Franciscan friar from Flanders, France. While staying in Palestine with King Louis IX, who was leading the Crusade, he heard about the Christian situation in the Mongol Empire, especially about the reputation of Sartaq, the son of Batu (1207-1255), as a Christian. With the aim of spreading Christianity in the Don River basin, he left Ark (now Akko, Israel) in 1253 with a personal letter from Louis IX to Sartaq. Since spreading Christianity in Sartaq's territory was not permitted, he went on to the court of Mongolian king Mongke Khan, staying there for about half a year from the end of 1253. After staying there for about half a year, he returned home with a letter from Mongke Khan to Louis IX, arriving in Tripoli in 1255. The travelogue, which was a report to Louis IX, contains detailed information about the situation in the Mongol Empire.
