Sotaro Iba

Japanese: 伊庭想太郎 - いばそうたろう

1851-1903 A swordsman and educator from the Meiji period.
Born in October 1851. Second son of Iba Gunbei and younger brother of Iba Hachiro. Taught Shinkage-ryu swordsmanship at a private school, and served as principal of Tokyo Agricultural College and president of the Japan Savings Bank. In 1901, he participated in the founding of the Tokyo City Education Association, but was so outraged by the words and actions of its chairman, Hoshi Toru, that he stabbed him to death five days after the association was formed. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and died of an illness in prison in September 1903. He was 53 years old. Born in Edo.

1851－1903　明治時代の剣術家,教育者。
嘉永(かえい)4年10月生まれ。伊庭軍兵衛の次男。伊庭八郎の弟。私塾で心形刀流の剣術をおしえ,東京農学校校長,日本貯蓄銀行頭取をつとめる。明治34年東京市教育会の結成にくわわるが,会長星亨(とおる)の言動に憤慨し,結成5日後に刺殺した。無期徒刑となり明治36年9月獄中で病死。53歳。江戸出身。
