Piazzetta (English spelling) Giovanni Battista Piazzetta

Piazzetta (English spelling) Giovanni Battista Piazzetta

Italian Venetian painter. Born in Venice on February 13, he died there on April 9, 1754. After training under his father Giacomo, a wood sculptor, and the painter Antonio Molinari (1665-1727), he studied under Giuseppe Maria Crespi (1597-1630) in Bologna, where he learned strong contrasts of light and dark and dynamic composition. In 1711, he joined the Venetian painters' guild. After early works such as The Martyrdom of St. James (1717, San Stae) and The Appearance of the Virgin to St. Filippo Neri (1725-27, Santa Maria della Faba), he painted the large-scale The Triumph of St. Domenico (Santi Giovanni e Paolo) in 1727, establishing a bright and light-hearted style. He reached his prime in the 1740s, and works such as The Fortune Teller (1740, Venice Accademia Gallery) and Rebekah at the Well (c. 1740, Brera Gallery) are characterized by vivid coloring and solid composition, making him, along with Tiepolo, one of the leading Venetian painters of the 18th century. In 1750, he became the first director of the Accademia, but his style was already showing signs of decline.
