The highest academic institution in the Soviet Union. Planned by Peter I in 1724, it was founded the following year by Catherine I in St. Petersburg as the Russian Academy of Sciences. After the revolution, it was renamed in 1925, moved to Moscow in 1934, and merged with the Communist Academy to include a social science department in 1936. Its basic mission was to contribute to the general improvement of basic and applied science in the Soviet Union and to research and develop the results of scientific thought in the world. It was divided into 17 departments, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, physiology, history, economics, literature, and linguistics, and each had academic facilities such as research institutes, laboratories, observatories, and museums. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the academies of science in each republic became independent along with the republic, but most of the Federal Academy of Sciences was inherited by the Russian Academy of Sciences (established in 1990).
