The Macedonian uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1903 took its name from the fact that it broke out on August 2 (July 20 in the lunar calendar), the day of Saint Ilin. Macedonia, along with the present-day regions of Eastern and Western Thrace and Albania, remained under Ottoman rule even after the Congress of Berlin (1878). From the end of the 19th century, a movement demanding autonomy ("Macedonia for Macedonians") grew in strength, and in 1893 the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) was formed, led by Social Democrats such as Gotse Delchev (1872-1903).
