Hungarian novelist. Born into a wealthy Jewish family. He gained attention with his novel Unfinished Words (1947), which analyzed intellectual groups from a modern perspective. His sequel, Answers (1950-52), deals with the workers' uprisings of the 1930s. As a progressive intellectual, he was involved in political activities, and experienced exile and imprisonment. After World War II, he repeatedly clashed with the dogmatism of the Communist Party, and during the Hungarian Revolution, he served three years in prison for his novella Niki (1956), which criticized the party. He later wrote a novel, The Excommunicator (1965), which imitated Stalin. His writing skills did not diminish even in his later years, and he published the autobiographical work No Judgement (1969) and the novella Imaginative Report on an American Pop Festival (1971), which was in a unique genre.
