A marine fish of the family Scorpaeniformes and family Gurnardidae (illustration). "Bou" means fish, and the word is said to originate from "haubou," or crawling fish. It grows to about 40cm in length. It is characterized by its head covered with hard bony plates, large pectoral fins, and three soft rays on the lower part of the fins that form finger-like appendages. It is found throughout Japan, from southern Hokkaido to Australia and South Africa, living in coastal sandy and muddy areas, walking on the seabed and digging up food using its appendages. It can also spread its large pectoral fins to glide through the sea. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
