In traditional Chinese medicine, A. lancea DC. and its varieties var. chinensis Kitamura, var. simplicifolia Kitamura are grown in China, and the rhizomes of A. lancea DC. grown in Japan are grown in Japan. They contain essential oils, and the main component in Chinese A. lancea DC. is atractylodin, while in Japanese A. lancea is the sesquiterpene atractylone. They are effective in strengthening the stomach, regulating the intestines, and regulating water metabolism, and are used as a diuretic in combination with other herbal medicines to treat vomiting, indigestion, and swelling in the lower limbs.
