An 18th-century German school of poetry. The ancient Greek Anacreonian poetry published in France in 1554 by Henri Étienne (father and son) had a wide influence throughout Europe, but around 1739 a group of young men appeared in Halle, Germany, who translated this poetry into German and at the same time composed poems modelled on it. This group is called the Anacreonian School. As if in reaction to the religious atmosphere of Halle, one of the centers of Pietism, their poetry was based on themes of wine, love and friendship, and sang of the joys of this world. It was literature of a Rococo character, with a sense of light-hearted forms, a yearning for simple and elegant things, and a spirit of delight in playfulness and wit.
