…First, around 1790, H. Maudsley of England spent 10 years creating one highly accurate screw (lead screw), and established the technology to precisely replicate a second and third lead screw using a lathe attached to this as a moving screw. Meanwhile, the production of female threads, which had previously been difficult, became dramatically easier with the use of taps created by Joseph Clement (1769-1844), who worked in Maudsley's factory. It was J. Whitworth, also a student of Maudsley, who created a thread-cutting lathe that is not different from the current one, and thus established the technology for mass production of fastening screws and moving screws. …
