The name given to the people of the Netherlands who rose up in rebellion against the tyranny of King Philip II of Spain in 1563. In Dutch, they are called Geuzen, and in German, Geusen. In addition to the nobility, many Calvinist citizens participated, and they resisted fiercely, refusing to succumb to the severe oppression. The pirate fleet that attacked Spanish ships at sea, in cooperation with William I of Orange, became the driving force behind Dutch independence. → The Eighty Years' War Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
