Yahiko [village] - Yahiko

Japanese: 弥彦[村] - やひこ

A village in Nishikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 8,483 (1995). It is located at the eastern foot of Mt. Yahiko (638m) at the western edge of the Echigo Plain. The JR Yahiko Line runs through the southern part of the town. It developed as a temple town for Yahiko Shrine, Ichinomiya in Echigo Province, and was also a post town on the Hokuriku Kaido. It is the center of the Yahiko area of the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park, and has many tourist spots such as Kannonji Onsen, Yahiko Onsen, and Echigo Nanaura. In the spring, there is a Yukake Festival, and in the summer, a Lantern Festival. Agriculture is changing from a single crop of rice to a diversified management, and soybean production is particularly thriving.

新潟県中部，西蒲原（にしかんばら）郡の村。人口8483(1995)。越後平野西端に位置する弥彦山(638m)の東麓にある。JR弥彦線が町域南部を通る。越後国一宮弥彦神社の門前町として発達し，北陸街道の宿場でもあった。佐渡弥彦米山国定公園の弥彦地区の中心であり，観音寺温泉，弥彦温泉，越後七浦など多くの観光地がある。春は湯かけまつり，夏は灯籠まつりがある。農業は米の単作から多角的経営に変わりつつあり，特に枝豆の生産が盛ん。
