Nose Asaji

Nose Asaji

A scholar of Japanese literature and a researcher of Nohgaku. Born in Kyoto Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Literature at Kyoto Imperial University in 1923 (Taisho 12). He served as professor at Otani University, Tokyo Higher Normal School, and Tokyo University of Literature and Science (later Tokyo University of Education), before becoming president of Nara University of Arts and Sciences in 1954 (Showa 29). He also made many achievements in areas such as linked verse and haiku, but in later years he devoted himself to the study of Nohgaku, and in 1940 he received the Japan Academy Imperial Prize for his major work, A Study of the Origins of Nohgaku (1938). His other works include Commentary on Zeami's Sixteen Works (1940-44).

国文学者、能楽研究家。京都府に生まれる。1923年(大正12)京都帝国大学文学科卒業。大谷(おおたに)大学、東京高等師範学校、東京文理科大学(のち東京教育大学)の教授を歴任、54年(昭和29)奈良学芸大学学長に就任。連歌(れんが)・俳諧(はいかい)などにも多くの業績を残したが、後年は能楽の研究に主力を注ぎ、主著の『能楽源流考』(1938)は40年に日本学士院恩賜賞を受賞した。ほかに『世阿弥(ぜあみ)十六部集評釈』(1940~44)などがある。
