shire

…a geographical and local administrative unit found in the United Kingdom and many of its former colonies. The name shire was used because the largest local administrative unit in existence before the Norman conquest of England in 1066 was called a county after the conquest. In England, however, although there have been changes in the structure, the unity as a regional and self-governing community, including the sheriff, has remained consistent since the Anglo-Saxon period.
