The world's first science fiction magazine was launched in the United States in 1926. It was founded by Hugo Gernsback (1884-1967) and continues to this day, producing science fiction that primarily glorifies scientific civilization. A second science fiction magazine, Astounding, was published in 1930, popularizing hard science fiction that was more closely linked to scientific theory. Fantasy and Science Fiction was published in 1949, and Galaxy in 1950, ushering in an era when the four major science fiction magazines were about to compete.
