Among farms, those whose main purpose is commodity production (farm area of 30 ares or more, or agricultural product sales of 500,000 yen or more) are called commercial farms, while those whose main purpose is self-sufficiency in rice for food (less than 30 ares, less than 500,000 yen) are called self-sufficiency farms. This definition was established in 1990, and of the 3.44 million farms in 1995, 2.65 million were commercial farms (full-time farmers + part-time farmers) and 790,000 were self-sufficiency farms. 農家のうち,商品生産を主たる目的とする農家(経営耕地面積30a以上。または農産物販売額50万円以上)を販売農家,飯米自給等を主たる目的とする農家(30a未満,50万円未満)を自給的農家という。1990年から設けられた定義で,95年の農家344万戸のうち販売農家(専業農家+兼業農家)が265万戸,自給的農家が79万戸である。なお,自給的農家にほぼ類似するものとして,それまでは飯米農家という言葉が使用されていた。
