Congo [River] - Congo

Japanese: コンゴ[川] - コンゴ
Congo [River] - Congo
The second largest river in Africa, it flows through central Africa near the equator. In the former Democratic Republic of the Congo, it is called the Zaire River. It is 4,667 km long. Its drainage area is 3.7 million km2 , and it almost overlaps with the Congo Basin. The Luapula River originates in the mountains of northern Zambia and becomes the Lubua River, which joins the Lualaba River originating in the Shaba region, and flows northward to become the main Congo river after passing through the Stanley Falls. It flows west from Kisangani and forms the main artery of the Congo Basin together with the Lomami River, and turns southwest to join the Ubangi River and Kasai River and reaches Kinshasa. It then becomes a rapid current and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at its vast mouth. It is an important transportation route, and plans for power development are being made. From the 14th to the 19th century, the Loango and Kongo Kingdoms flourished in the basin from the mouth of the river to the Atlantic coast, and the Luba and Lunda Kingdoms flourished inland upstream of the Lualaba River. The Portuguese arrived at the river mouth in 1482. Later, Livingstone explored the upper reaches, and Stanley explored the entire basin.
