A rokyoku (traditional Japanese folk song) piece. It is said to have been written by rokyoku performer Suzuki Yonewaka on the spot in 1933 when he was recording it on a record. It is a love story set in Sado between Gosaku, who is rescued during a storm while out fishing from Kashiwazaki, and a local girl called O-Mitsu. The beautiful, mournful voice of O-Mitsu, unable to forget her lover, travels to Kashiwazaki in a tub boat, and this became a hit, raising Suzuki Yonewaka's status as a rokyoku performer. It was also made into a film in 1934, starring Yamada Isuzu as O-Mitsu. [Yano Seiichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
