Three Hundred Li Across Enemy Lines

Japanese: 敵中横断三百里 - てきちゅうおうだんさんびゃくり

A true story by Yamanaka Minetaro. It was serialized in Shonen Club in 1930 (Showa 5), and published by Kodansha along with other short stories. This novel, which depicts the exploits of the Kenkawa Scout Corps, who went deep into the rear of the Russian army to scout for the enemy in preparation for the Battle of Mukden during the Russo-Japanese War, sold explosively, coupled with the national situation on the eve of the Manchurian Incident, and became one of the best-sellers. Since the Taisho period, Yamanaka Minetaro had written many so-called true stories for Chuokoron and other publications under the pen names Yamanaka Minari and Okubo Itto, and based on his experiences and on the testimony of surviving members of the scout corps, he has succeeded in incorporating a unique perception of Russia and a sense of crisis into the story.

山中峯太郎の実録小説。1930年(昭和5)《少年俱楽部》に連載，他の短編と合わせて講談社より刊行。日露戦争のさなかに奉天大会戦に備えてロシア軍の背後深く敵情偵察に赴いた建川斥候隊の活躍を描いたこの小説は，満州事変前夜の国情とあいまって爆発的に売れ，屈指のベストセラーとなった。山中峯太郎は大正期から山中未成，大窪逸人等の筆名で《中央公論》などにいわゆる実録ものを数多く書いていたが，その経験のうえに，生き残りの斥候隊員の証言を得て，そこに独特の対露認識と危機感を盛りこむことに成功。
