In his book The American Political Tradition (1948), he presented a new interpretation that at the root of the partisan, regional, economic, and ideological conflicts in American political history was a common ideology of "belief in property rights, economic individualism, and the value of competition," which gained him a reputation, and he won the Pulitzer Prize for The Age of Reform (1955). He attempted bold interpretations by incorporating social science, especially social psychology, into his historical research, and some pointed out that his interpretations lacked empirical evidence. However, he was one of the leading figures in the American Historical Association after World War II, and many of his books and papers have been translated into Japanese, greatly influencing Japanese research into American history. …
