General of the Western Expedition

Japanese: 征西将軍 - せいせいしょうぐん

A general temporarily appointed to pacify the western provinces (especially Kyushu) from ancient times to the Middle Ages. Otomo no Tabito is said to have been the first to do so in the early Nara period. In 1338, Emperor Godaigo was attacked by Ashikaga Takauji and fell into a difficult situation. He devised a temporary peace plan and gave Prince Kaneyoshi the title of Seisei Shogun and sent him to Kyushu, making him the commander-in-chief of the Southern Court forces. Kaneyoshi fought well with the help of the Kikuchi and Aso clans, and the Southern Court forces in Kyushu harassed the Shogunate forces for a long time. Prince Yoshinari was the last to do so, before the unification of the Northern and Southern Courts.

古代〜中世，西国（特に九州）を平定するために臨時に任命された将軍。奈良初期の大伴旅人が初見とされる。1338年足利尊氏に攻められて苦境に陥った後醍醐天皇は，一時的和平を策すると同時に懐良(かねよし)親王に征西将軍の称号を与えて九州に下し，南朝方勢力の総帥とした。懐良は菊池・阿蘇氏などの力をかりて善戦，九州の南朝軍は長く幕府軍を苦しめた。南北朝合一前の良成親王が最後。
