In the past in Japan, when a baby was born and the mother got sick or died, or the mother's milk supply was poor, the baby was sometimes given a low-nutritional substitute called ubairazu, which was made by grinding and boiling brown rice. However, since it was best to receive someone else's breast milk, wet nurses in the sense of wet nurses (menoto) have been common throughout the ages.
