…The Chinese also used the word in the late Qing Dynasty to express their refusal to be subordinate to the Manchu dynasty. The etymology is generally believed to have been a phonetic change of the name Qin that spread westward, especially through the southern sea route to ancient India, where it was written in Sanskrit as Cinasthana (Land of Chin), and was then reimported to China when Buddhist scriptures were translated into Chinese and written as "Shina." Xuanzang, at the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, also said that his country was called Shina in Central Asia and India. …
