The northwesternmost region of Italy. Area: 3,262 km2, population: 120,000 (1994). Bordering France to the west and Switzerland to the north, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and other peaks, it is the smallest region in Italy, located in a valley (vale means "valley") surrounded by high peaks. The capital is Aosta. Because of its mountainous location, the main industries were livestock farming and forestry, but since the 19th century, it has been blessed with a relatively large variety of mineral resources (iron, coal, antimony, lead, etc.) compared to other regions in Italy, and mining and smelting have rapidly expanded. The ironworks in Cogne have been particularly important. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
