Hitopadeśa - Hitopadeśa (English spelling)

A collection of Sanskrit stories from ancient India. Meaning "useful teachings." Written by Narayana (9th century). A version of the Panchatantra, a collection of stories transmitted to Bengal, it reorganized the original five stories into four, added 17 unique stories, and revised the order. As the title suggests, it contains many proverbial verses, and places emphasis on practical morality and life lessons through fables. The writing style is simple, and it is the most widely used of the Panchatantra versions.

古代インドのサンスクリット説話集。「有益な教訓」の意。ナーラーヤナ（9世紀）の作。ベンガルに伝わった説話集『パンチャタントラ』の一伝本で、原本の五編を四編に改編し、独特の説話17を加え配列にも改訂を加えている。題名の示すように格言的詩句を多く含み、寓話(ぐうわ)に託して実践道徳、処世訓に重きを置いている。文体平易で、『パンチャタントラ』の諸伝本中もっとも普及した。
