…The newspaper was founded by CJ Panecook in November 1789 during the French Revolution and served as the official gazette until the Third Empire. Its name at the time of its founding was the Gazette National – Le Monitour Universelle, but in 1811 it was shortened to the latter half and abbreviated to Le Monitour (The Watchman).
