A perennial small shrub of the genus Hypoestes in the family Acanthaceae, with about 150 species found in the Old World tropics, Madagascar, and Asia. In Japan, the species commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant under the name Hypoestes is Hypoestes sanguinolenta Hook. Native to Madagascar, the stem branches out from the base and rises to a height of 0.5 to 1 meter. The opposite leaves are ovate and thin, with a tapered tip. キツネノマゴ科ヒポエステス属Hypoestesの多年生の小低木で,旧世界熱帯,マダガスカル,アジアに約150種を産する。日本でハイポエステスの名で観葉植物として多く栽培されるのは,ヒポエステス・サングイノレンタH.sanguinolenta Hook.である。これはマダガスカルの原産で,茎は株もとから分枝して立ち上がり,高さは0.5~1mとなる。対生する葉は卵形でうすく,先のほうが細くとがる。表面は緑色で,全体に赤桃色の斑点模様が一面にはいる。
