Ziyang-ren (English spelling)

A fossil human of the recent human stage discovered in China. It was unearthed in 1951, along with many other mammalian fossils, during construction of an iron bridge near Ziyang County, Sichuan Province. Only the braincase, lacking the base of the skull, and the maxilla and palate were discovered. It appears to be an adult female. The high skull and bulging forehead suggest it is a recent human, but the supraorbital ridges are more developed than in modern humans. As it retains a form slightly older than Cro-Magnon and Mountaintop Cave Man, it was considered to be the oldest recent human in China, but analysis of the wood unearthed has suggested that it is much newer, dating to around 7,500 years ago.

中国で発見された新人段階の化石人類。1951年、四川(しせん／スーチョワン)省資陽県付近の鉄橋工事の際に、多数の哺乳(ほにゅう)類化石とともに出土した。頭蓋(とうがい)底を欠く脳頭蓋と上顎(じょうがく)骨、口蓋骨だけが発見された。成人女性とみられる。頭蓋が高く、前頭部が膨らんでいるので、新人と思われるが、眼窩上(がんかじょう)隆起は現代人より発達している。クロマニョン人や山頂洞人よりやや古い形態をとどめているため、中国における最古の新人とみなされたが、伴出した木材の分析から、約7500年前と年代がはるかに新しく推定されている。
