...The name "tako" spread from Edo during the Edo period, and in Kansai it is called "ika", "ika nobori" or "nobori", in Kyushu it is called "takobata" or "hata", and in other dialects it is called "taka", "tatsu" or "tengubata". The original meaning of the English word "kite" is "black kite", the German word "Drache" is "dragon", the Spanish word "cometa" is "comet", and the Hindi word "patang" is "butterfly", all of which refer to something that flies in the sky. Tako have been made in Asia and Europe since ancient times, and their origin is said to be in China, but their origin is unknown.
