Sagae clan

Japanese: 寒河江氏 - さがえうじ

A powerful clan of the Middle Ages whose family name was derived from Sagae Manor in Dewa Province, which was the domain of the Konoe family. The clan's ancestors were Oe Hiromoto, a shogunate official who was given the position of land steward of the manor in the early Kamakura period, and his eldest son, Chikahiro. Chikahiro sided with the retired emperor during the Jokyu War, but his son Hirotoki's line was granted the position of land steward of Minami Sagae Manor, and it is said that they moved to Sagae during the late Kamakura period under Hirotoki's grandson, Motoaki. However, throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, the family name of Hirotoki's descendants was based on Chikahiro's position as Kanto Minbu Gon Shoyu, and they called themselves the Shoyu clan. During the Nanboku-cho period, the Shoyu clan was known to have supported the Dewa Southern Court. In the Tenmonhon Oe Keizu and Sonpi Bunmyaku, the 8th generation grandson of Hiromoto was listed as the first to take the Sagae clan name in the early Muromachi period, and even in extant historical documents, the name Sagae clan was only recorded around this time.

近衛家領出羽国寒河江荘を名字の地とする，中世の豪族。鎌倉初期に当荘地頭職を得た幕府官僚大江広元とその嫡男親広を始祖とする。親広は承久の乱で上皇方に荷担したが，その子広時の系統が南寒河江荘地頭職を安堵され，鎌倉後期の広時の孫元顕のとき，寒河江に移住したと伝えられる。ただし，13～14世紀を通じて，広時子孫の名字は親広の官途民部権少輔に拠り，少輔氏を称す。南北朝期の少輔氏は，出羽南朝方として知られる。《天文本大江系図》《尊卑分脈》では，室町初期の広元8代孫時氏を寒河江氏を名のった初代とし，現存史料でも，このころからようやく寒河江氏の名称が記載されている。
