Pope of the Roman Catholic Church (reigned 1958-1963). Born in Italy, his former name was AG Roncalli. Before ascending to the throne, he served as a papal nuncio in Eastern Europe. As a pope, he showed sympathy for socialism, advocated international peace, promoted church unity, and convened the Second Vatican Council.
