...A French translation of Rodrigues's "Little Japanese Grammar" was published in Macau, China, in 1820. Even after the country was isolated, the Jesuits continued their Japanese studies, and the Frenchman Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761), who had been a missionary in Canada and had worked for 22 years on the editing of the "Encyclopedia of Treboux," had a wide influence with his three-volume "History of Japanese Christianity" (1715). However, the only people who could use the local materials were those allowed to reside at the Dutch trading posts in Hirado and Nagasaki. F. Caron, who lived in Japan for about 20 years, wrote The Great Kingdom of Japan (1648) in Dutch, E. Kaempfer, who arrived in Japan in 1690 (Genroku 3), published The History of Japan and The Diary of a Journey to Visit Edo, C.P. Thunberg, who arrived in Japan in 1775 (An'ei 4), published Flora of Japan and A Journey to Japan, and Philipp Franz von Siebold, who arrived in Japan in 1823 (Bunsei 6), published Japan.
