…After the Puritan Revolution, the anti-King forces were completely suppressed for a time, but they regained their strength from the early 1670s, and at the end of the 1670s launched a major movement to remove the Duke of York (later James II) from the list of candidates to succeed Charles II to the throne. The derogatory term given to the central forces was Whig, which comes from the Scottish rebel Whiggamore. Their support base was the early industrial capital and merchant class, and later included some of the aristocracy and large landowners. …
