ragtime

The most prominent musical element that made up jazz during the Dixie era was the marching elements played by brass bands, but other elements included folk songs, semi-classical songs, blues (songs by black people that originated in the rural South. At first, there was no set form, but at the same time as jazz emerged, the four-bar, three-line, twelve-bar chorus format became the standard), and ragtime (piano music composed by black pianists in the South as music for the dance known as the cakewalk. It has a form similar to 19th-century classical piano music, but the rhythm is syncopated.
