A legendary king of Athens in Greek mythology. He is said to be the son of Pandion, the son of King Erichthonius, who was born from the earth, but he is often confused with Erichthonius, and is also closely associated with Poseidon in the rituals of the oldest temple on the Acropolis, named after him, Erechtheion, so it is highly likely that the three were originally the same. He succeeded Pandion as king of Athens, fought against Eleusis, and following the instructions of an oracle, he sacrificed his daughter to bring victory to Athens. However, shortly afterwards, Poseidon, angry at the death of his son, King Eumolpus of Thrace, who sided with the Eleusinians, in the battle, asked Zeus to kill Erechtheus with a lightning bolt.
