(1) A speed race between two or more motorboats. Boats are divided into inboard, which has an engine inside the boat, and outboard, which has an engine outside the boat, racing runabouts with no steps on the running surface, and hydroplanes with steps. Classes are also divided by the size of the engine and the weight of the boat. Usually, it is a lap race, and the prestigious races are the British International Trophy Race (BIT, from 1903 to 1961) and the Gold Cup Race (since 1904). Also famous are the long-distance open ocean race from Miami to Nassau and the marathon race from Albany to New York. In Japan, there is the Atami Ocean Cup Race (All Japan Offshore Grand Prix). (2) Also called kyotei. Public gambling sponsored by prefectures and specific cities and towns based on the Motorboat Racing Law (1951). Winning boat betting tickets are sold and winning boats are paid out.
