In 729, the Muslim army under the command of Spanish governor Abd al-Rahman 'Abd al-Raḥmān al-Ghāfiqi (?-732) crossed the Pyrenees through the pass of Roncesbaux (Roncesvalles), raided Gascony, occupied Bordeaux, and crushed the army of Oude, Duke of Aquitaine, on the right bank of the Garonne.
