…The first discovery in the 18th century was the discovery of electrical conductors. In 1729, Stephen Gray (1666-1736) of England discovered that the ability of an object to attract lighter objects when rubbed against it could be transmitted to other objects through linen thread or metal. This was an important discovery that not only distinguished between conductors and non-conductors, but also led to the recognition that electricity could flow, laying the foundation for the later theory of electrical fluids. …
