Dhrupad (English spelling) [Hindi]
A form of Indian vocal music. Formerly called dhruvapada, it developed in the royal courts in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is said to be the most mentally and physically demanding form of music in the pursuit of artistic excellence, and is solemn and reminiscent of religious ceremonies. Its founder is said to be Rājā Mān Singh (1486-1525) of North India, but its origins can be found in prabandha (musical composition), which was popular around the 12th century.
