Japanese: 路 - ろ（英語表記）lu

The name of a local administrative division in the Song and Jin dynasties of China. It succeeded the roads of the Tang dynasty, and with the unification of the Song dynasty, during the Taiping Xingguo period (976-983), it extended to almost the entire country. During the Zhidao period (995-997), a system of 15 routes was established, and the Zhuanunshi, who were in charge of financial administration, gradually gained real power over the routes and became the highest local administrative division. In the first year of the Yuanfeng era (1078), this number was increased to 23 routes. In the Southern Song, there were roughly 16 routes, and the Jin Dynasty followed the Song's example with 19 routes. In addition, the Song dynasty had four Hebei routes and six Shaanxi routes as military routes on the northwest border, and a jinglei anfushi was appointed as its governor.
