It has a unique fragrance and is cultivated for ornamental and medicinal purposes. The root contains 8% essential oil and is called valerian root. In Japan, it is used as a substitute for the European Valeriana root. The essential oil contains various sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes and has a unique odor. It is used as a sedative for mental instability and hysteria. However, for medicinal purposes, Valeriana officinalis L., the European plant from which the Valeriana root is taken, is superior. ...
