It is a type of qualitative abnormality of sexual goals (sexual perversion), also known as sadism. Along with masochism, it is included in Algolagnie (German: pain sexuality). In other words, Algolagnie is the pursuit of sexual pleasure or satisfaction by inflicting pain on a sexual object or receiving pain from it. Active Algolagnie is called sadism, and passive Algolagnie is called masochism. It is not uncommon for the two to coexist in the same person.

Sadism was named by the German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902) after this type of sexual behavior, which was typified in the life and novels of the French writer Marquis de Sade. Sadists derive sexual pleasure from inflicting pain on their sexual object, eventually reaching orgasm, and therefore may not seek normal sexual intercourse. Sometimes, they are not limited to sexual goals, but may pursue the sole goal of being aggressive and inflicting pain. Such people are called sadists. Generally, sadists engage in actions such as whipping, binding, and humiliation, but some are aroused by the mere fantasy of imagining these actions. Some sadists also engage in pleasure killing, necrophilia, and animal sadism.

Psychology

In the sexual theory of Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, sadism is considered to be a fundamental characteristic of sexual impulse rather than a sexual perversion. In other words, the concept of sadism is expanded to include anything from an active attitude toward a sexual object to obtaining satisfaction by subjugating the sexual object and inflicting pain on it, and only the most extreme forms are called perversions. Freud proposed the concept of anal sadism as a normal developmental stage. The sexual impulse of an infant is not something that seeks pleasure through a specific object or method, but rather seeks pleasure using all possible means, and is, so to speak, multifaceted. Sadism itself is not related to sexual impulse, and is sometimes considered to be a dominating impulse like an aggressive impulse or a desire to conquer, but sadism and masochism are generally not considered to be separate and independent, but one thing, sadomasochism. This is based on the idea that sexual impulse itself has both active and passive forms, and that sexual impulse is created by this opposition. In other words, the two are considered to be inseparable. An important issue is whether to consider sadism in relation to sexual impulse or independently.

Sadism in literature and art

The name sadism was coined after the 18th century French writer Marquis de Sade described numerous examples of such tendencies in his works. The range of sadism is extremely wide, including physical sadism such as whipping, aggression, the desire for power, and mental abuse, and mild sadism is often found in normal people. Freud said that sadism and masochism (a condition in which a person feels pleasure from being subjected to masochism) always appear together in the same individual, and that the difference between the two is, so to speak, merely a matter of technique, but recent theories by analysts have cast doubt on this idea. There is also no direct relationship between sadism and masculine tendencies, or between masochism and feminine tendencies.

Even before Sade, expressions of sadism could be found in literature and art. In Plato's Republic there is an episode about a man who was seized by a desire to see the bodies of those who had been executed, and in Lucretius's Treatise on Nature there is a passage that says, "It is amusing to watch from the shore the peril of an unfortunate sailor who is fighting death." Medieval paintings depicting the Passion of Christ, the martyrdom of saints, and the punishments of hell clearly show the artist's unconscious sadism. Meanwhile, British literary historian Mario Pratz, who considers Sade to be the origin of Romanticism, has created a lineage of sadistic literature that links British novelists Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818), Charles Robert Maturin (1782-1824) (Melmoth the Wanderer), Baudelaire, Flaubert, Swinburne, and Mirbeau (The Garden of Torment). "Cruelty and ecstasy are the same feeling," said Baudelaire, and "extreme hatred between the sexes is the basis of love," said D'Annunzio. Sado-masochism plays an important role in the foundation of Sartre's existentialist theory and the foundation of the "black humor" of surrealism. Masochism is named after the tendency of the work of the Austrian writer Sacher-Masoch.

性目標の質的異常（性倒錯）の一種で、加虐性愛ともいう。マゾヒズムとともにアルゴラグニーAlgolagnie（ドイツ語、疼痛(とうつう)性愛）に含まれる。すなわち、性対象に苦痛を与えたり、与えられたりすることによって性的快感や満足を得ようとするものをアルゴラグニーといい、能動的アルゴラグニーをサディズム、受動的アルゴラグニーをマゾヒズムという。この両者は同一人物のなかに併存することが少なくない。

　サディズムは、ドイツの精神医学者クラフト・エビングRichard von Krafft-Ebing（1840―1902）が、フランスの作家サド侯爵の実生活や小説のなかで典型的に示したこの種の性行動にちなんで命名したものである。性対象に対して苦痛を与えて性的な快感を得、ついにはオルガスムスに達するので、正常の性交を求めることをしない場合もある。ときには性目標に限定せず、攻撃的で苦痛を与えることのみを目標として追求する場合もある。こうした者はサディストsadistとよばれる。一般に、鞭(むち)で打ったり、縛り付けたり、辱めるような言動が多いが、単にこれらの言動を空想するだけの幻想によって興奮する者もある。なかには快楽殺人、屍姦(しかん)、動物サディズムなどもみられる。

精神分析の創始者フロイトの性理論においては、サディズムは性倒錯というより性衝動の根本的な性質とみなされる。すなわちサディズムの概念は拡張され、性対象に対して能動的態度を示すことから、性対象を屈服させ、苦痛を与えることで満足を得るものまでが含まれ、その極端なものだけが倒錯とよばれる。フロイトは正常な発達段階として肛門(こうもん)サディズム期の概念を提唱した。幼児の性衝動は、ある特定の対象や方法によって快感を得ようとするものでなく、可能なあらゆる手段を使って快感を得ようとするもので、いわば多角的である。サディズムそのものは性衝動と関係ないもので、攻撃衝動とか征服欲のような支配衝動とみなされることもあるが、一般にはサディズムとマゾヒズムは別個に独立したものでなく、サド・マゾヒズムsadomasochismとして一つのものと考えられる。これは性衝動そのものが能動態と受動態をもつものであって、こうした対立によって性衝動がつくりあげられているという考えによる。すなわち、両者は切り離して考えることのできないものと考えられるのである。サディズムを性衝動との関係で考えるか、無関係に考えるかが重要な問題となってくる。

文学・美術にみられるサディズム

フランス18世紀の作家サド侯爵が、その作品のなかに、こうした傾向の例をおびただしく描写したので、サディズムなる名称が生まれた。鞭打ちなどによる肉体的サディズムから、攻撃欲、権力欲、精神的虐待などを含めて、その範囲はきわめて広く、正常の人間にも軽度のサディズムはしばしば認められる。フロイトは、サディズムとマゾヒズム（被虐快感症）は同一の個人のもとに、つねに同伴して現れ、両者の差異は、いわば純粋に技術上の問題にすぎないといったが、最近の分析学者の説では、この考えは疑問とされている。またサディズムと男性的傾向、マゾヒズムと女性的傾向との間にも、直接にはなんの関係もない。

　サド以前にも、文学や美術のなかにサディズムの表現はみられる。プラトンの『共和国』に「死刑に処せられた者の死体を見たいという欲望にとらわれて我慢できなかった男」のエピソードがあり、ルクレティウスの『万象論』に「死と戦いつつある不幸な船乗りの危難を、岸から見ているのは愉快なものだ」という文章がある。キリストの受難や聖者の殉教や地獄の刑罰を描いた中世の絵画には、明らかに画家の無意識のサディズムが働いている。一方、サドをロマン主義の源流とみなすイギリスの文学史家マリオ・プラーツは、イギリスの小説家であるルイス（通称マンク）Matthew Gregory Lewis（1775―1818）やマチューリン Charles Robert Maturin（1782―1824）（『放浪者メルモス』）、ボードレール、フロベール、スウィンバーン、ミルボー（『責苦の庭』）らを結ぶサディズム文学の系譜をつくった。「残虐性と逸楽とは同じ感覚である」とボードレールはいい、「両性間の極端な憎悪こそ愛の基盤である」とダンヌンツィオは述べている。サルトルの実存主義理論の根底にも、シュルレアリスムの「黒いユーモア」の基盤にも、サド・マゾヒズムは重要な役割を果たしている。なお、マゾヒズムは、オーストリアの作家ザッヘル・マゾッホの作品傾向にちなむ命名。
