...A major Hollywood genre along with westerns and gangster movies, it is a film that, following the format of stage musicals, focuses on singing and dancing and integrates them with drama. It is also called a "movie musical" or "screen musical," but in general it is often simply called a "musical" without distinguishing it from stage musicals.
[The birth of musical films]
When Al Jolson (1886-1950), who had become an American idol through his records in the early 1920s, sang "My Mammy" and "Blue Skies" in the Warner Brothers experimental sound short "April Showers" (1926) and "The Jazz Singer" (1927), the "talkies" and "film musicals" were born at the same time.
