Sayama City is located in the southern part of Saitama Prefecture, straddling the Sayama Hills and the Musashino Plateau. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The central city was a post town on the Kamakura Kaido road in the Middle Ages, a market town in the early modern period, and a producer of Murayama Kasuri fabrics. The Army Balloon Flight Test Site, established in 1910, became Japan's first airfield when the Army Flight School opened in 1919, and the city developed into a military city. The airfield was taken over by the US military after World War II, but two-thirds of it was returned in 1971, and many national, prefectural, and municipal facilities were built there, including the National Defense Medical College, residential areas, and the Aviation Memorial Park. The population has increased rapidly since the development of housing complexes since the 1960s, and the city is served by the JR Musashino Line, Seibu Shinjuku Line, Ikebukuro Line, Sayama Line, and the Kan'etsu Expressway. There are many factories producing electrical equipment, general equipment, and food products, and vegetables and tea are also grown in the surrounding area. The Seibu Dome and indoor ski resort are located around the southern shore of Lake Sayama. 72.11km2 . 341,924 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
