Li Shan-lan (English spelling)
[Born] 1801
[Died] Guangxu 8 (1882). Chinese mathematician in Beijing. Born in Haining (Zhejiang Province). His pen name was Renshu and his pen name was Qiujin. In 1845 (25th year of the Daoguang era), he was employed by Lu Fei's family, and in 1846 (26th year of the Daoguang era), he completed the Four Elements Solution (3 volumes), which explained the Four Elements Jade Mirror, and the following year he wrote the Exploring the Source of Logarithms (2 volumes), in which he discussed logarithmic methods. In 1852 (2nd year of the Xianfeng era), he went to Shanghai and worked for the London Missionary Society for eight years on the project of translating Western scientific books into Chinese. In addition to the Continuation of Geometry (9 volumes), he translated mathematics and science books in collaboration with the British missionary A. Wylie, including J. Herschel's "Outlines of Astronomy" (Dantian), De Morgan's "Elements of Algebra" (Algebra), and E. Loomis's "Analytical. Geometry and Calculus" (All published in 1859). In collaboration with J. Edkins, he translated "Centuries" and "Conic Sections" based on the original works of W. Fewell (1794-1866) (published in 1858). He translated "Botany" (59) with A. Williamson and Edkins, and his own works "The Square Circle and the Circular Arrow" and "The Secret of the Arrow" were also published in "Continuation of the Art of the Sea" (59). He then went to Suzhou, where Xu Youren (1800-1860), famous for compiling the Baifu Tang Mathematics Series, lived, but when the city fell into the hands of the Taiping Rebellion and Xu was killed (60), he returned to Shanghai and, under the protection of Zeng Guofan, published in the 6th year of the Tongzhi era (67) 13 mathematical works, including 7 unpublished ones, entitled Zhe Gu Si Zhai Mathematics (24 volumes). In the 7th year of the Tongzhi era (68), he was appointed chief instructor of mathematics at the Tongwen Guan in Beijing.

中国の数学者。海寧 (浙江省) の人。字は壬叔,号は秋じん。道光 25 (1845) 年,陸費の家に雇われ,同 26年に『四元玉鑑』を解説した『四元解』 (3巻) を完成し,翌年には『対数探源』 (2巻) を書いて対数法を論じた。咸豊2 (52) 年上海へ行き,8年間ロンドン宣教師会のもとで西洋科学書の漢訳事業に参加した。イギリス人宣教師 A.ワイリーと協力して訳出した数学・科学書には,『続幾何原本』 (9巻) のほかに,J.ハーシェルの"Outlines of Astronomy"の訳書『談天』,ド・モルガンの"Elements of Algebra"の訳書『代数学』および E.ルーミスの"Analytical.Geometry and Calculus"の訳書『代微積拾級』がある (いずれも 1859年に出版された) 。 J.エドキンズと協力して訳出したものに,W.フューウェル (1794~1866) の原著に基づく『重学』『円錐曲線』がある (58年に出版された) 。 A.ウィリアムソン,エドキンズとの共訳書に『植物学』 (59) が,また,自著の『方円闡微』『弧矢啓秘』も『続芸海珠塵』に収められて出版された (59) 。次いで『白芙堂算学叢書』の編纂で著名な徐有任 (1800~60) のいる蘇州へ行ったが,そこが太平天国の手に落ち,徐が殺される (60) と,上海へ戻り,曾国藩の庇護を受け,同治6 (67) 年に未刊の7種を含む 13種の数学の著作『則古昔斎算学』 (24巻) を出版した。同治7 (68) 年,北京の同文館算学総教習に任ぜられた。
