The oldest Lamaist temple in Outer Mongolia, located in the northern part of Oborkhangai Aimak, Mongolia. Its name means "treasure temple." In 1587, Abadaikhan, a powerful tribal leader of the Outer Mongolians, met with the Third Dalai Lama in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, and swore to be his patron. He was given a Buddha statue, and in 1589, Erdeni Zu was built to enshrine it. This marked the beginning of the spread of Yellow Hat Lamaism throughout Outer Mongolia. Incidentally, to the northwest of this temple is the site of the capital city of Karakorum, built by Ogedei Khan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
