An instrument that automatically records measurement results. Usually, ink or spark discharge is used to graph the measured values that change over time. There are continuous recorders and intermittent recorders. There are direct acting types, but the most common are auto-balancing types. Oscillographs are also considered a type of recording instrument. Recently, instruments that convert the values into digital quantities and record them on magnetic disks or magnetic tapes are widely used.
