A type of silk fabric. Designated as a traditional craft. A tsumugi fabric made by weaving the ikat and stripe techniques of Echigo Jofu, which have been used since the late 18th century in the Shiozawa region of Niigata Prefecture, with silk instead of hemp, it is characterized by its elaborate cross ikat (mosquito ikat) pattern, with a low-luster dupion thread with small knots selected for the warp and hand-spun pure cotton thread for the weft. The subdued pattern created by mixing ikat thread and ground thread matches the tsumugi fabric with an elegant austere look. There is also Shiozawa omeshi, which has omeshi weft woven into the ground weft. 15,000 bolts were woven (1975), and stable production continues.
