Died March 9, 1851. Danish physicist and chemist. He first helped his father in his pharmaceutical business, and later studied pharmacy and natural philosophy at the University of Copenhagen, where he became an associate professor of physical chemistry (1806) and then a full professor (17). In 1820, he discovered that a magnetic needle forms a right angle with a wire carrying an electric current. This discovery inspired experimental research into the relationship between electricity and magnetism, from F. Arago to M. Faraday, which led to the development of electromagnetism. He also made chemical contributions, such as the extraction and isolation of piperidine from Hemlock and the purification of metallic aluminum. In 1824, he founded the Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge, and contributed to the education and dissemination of science. His name is used in the CGS electromagnetic unit of magnetic field strength, "Oersted."

The CGS electromagnetic unit or gauss unit of magnetic field strength. The symbol Oe. 1 Oe is the strength of a magnetic field with a force of 1 dyn acting on a unit pole. The unit is named after H C Oersted. Using the SI unit ampere-turns per meter (A·m ^-1 ), 1 Oe = (1/4π) × 10 ³ A·m ^-1 .

デンマークの物理学者，化学者。初め父の薬業を手伝い，のちコペンハーゲン大学で薬学，自然哲学を修め，同大学物理化学員外教授 (1806) ，正教授 (17) 。 1820年電流を流した針金の近くで磁針が針金と直角になることを見出した。この発見に刺激されて F.アラゴから M.ファラデーにいたる電気と磁気の関係を追究する実験研究が行われ，電磁気学の発展をみることになった。またドクニンジンからのピペリジンの抽出・単離，金属アルミニウムの精製など，化学的業績もある。 24年に科学知識普及協会を創設し，科学の教育，普及にも貢献した。磁場の強さの CGS電磁単位「エルステッド」に名が使われている。
