His father was the Finnish naturalist Erik (Kirill) Gustavovich Laksman (1737-1796), who is known for his close friendship with the Japanese castaway Kodayu Daikokuya and others while living in Irkutsk. In 1791, thanks to his father Erik's efforts, the Russian government allowed Kodayu and others to return to Russia and attempted to establish trade relations with Japan.
